It would not be an exaggeration, if I say that Casablanca, America’s most loved movie has more content written about it than any other motion picture in the whole world. There have been legends and rumours with the making of the film as well as the finished product. The movie had two undecided versions till the time it was the last day of the shoot. One was the ending as filmed and the other one kept Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan as Rick and Ilsa, together. Also a lot of hype was created about the back stage tension between the principal actors.
While nobody can deny the fascination they derive about knowing to juicy details about their celebrity’s real lives, the real pleasure is actually watching the movie itself. But a little knowledge about the recent world history is required or you to understand and appreciate the strength of the movie. And if you know a little background about the movie, then voila! The film accomplishes something which is hard to master, a great story that envelops the audience in itself, forges a link with them and lets go only with the end credits. Many classics have critics declaring them as masterpieces, this, on the other hand led a cadre of officials at Warner Brothers to think that it would bomb at the box office. Instead, the movie has 8 Academy Award nominations to its credit, leading to three Oscars (Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture). The movie went on to have a long life not only at the box office but in the hearts of people. It would not be a bad idea to go to the store and watch the movie all over again with your kids who haven’t really got the chance to appreciate it.
