Black and White Baby Books: Why Do Babies Like Them So Much?

When my first child was born, my mother-in-law highly recommended we get him some black and white baby books. I had never heard of such a thing, but boy did my son love them! This led me to further research this curiosity.

You see, babies are not born with the best eyesight, it develops over time. In fact, for the first six months, they do not have fully developed sight.

This is why it is important to have toys and books that feature contrasting colors. Black, white, and red appear to be the best for this.

This helps the images to stand out more clearly, and helps to keep the baby’s attention better. Even though keeping a baby's attention is quite challenging!

You can find books like this at your local bookstore. Just start leafing through the books in the infant section, you’ll find some. Book publishers know about this little phenomenon, and have printed plenty of books that feature these colors.

There are also a lot of toys out there that feature these colors. Look for some the next time you head to your local department store, you may be surprised! I was amazed at how, given the choice, my child would repeatedly want to play with his zebra, much more then his other animal toys!

So before you dismiss this whole black and white baby books “fad”, remember, there is some truth to it! Babies do seem to enjoy it, and we need to keep them happy don’t we?
